Seasonal Designing: Change it up for Summer!
07/09/2008

Redecorating for summer can be a low budget project.

1. Windows are a good place to start, and are a very good economical consideration. With strong summer sun pouring heat through your windows, your air conditioner is working extra hard, thus creating higher electric bills. You may want to consider blocking out light as well as letting it in. Light weight and bright color materials can do the trick. Use bamboo curtain rods or roll up straw blinds may keep excess heat out while looking festive.

2. Change fabrics around the house. Besides your window treatments, you can use cheap cotton or linen slip covers to change the look of your couches and other furniture. Table cloths can be lighter or more have a summer scene or bright colors. Bed spreads and throw rugs can be changed to create more of a summer feel as well. Adding shear fabric to the interior design, including windows, gives a light, flowy feel to the space.

3. Replace winter scene and other dark pictures with summer landscapes and bright colored paintings that fit the season. Interior designers often suggest replacing these pictures and paintings, so that you won’t need to add new holes in the wall and you can use the same frames, thus saving you money and time for repair in the future.

4. Use accessories such as shells and other sand and sea items for decorating, perhaps loosely on end tables or as a center piece on the kitchen table. Take a walk on the beach and find sea glass to fill some jars around the house. Flowers also make a great addition and are in their fullest bloom so should be taken advantage of, especially if you grow them. You can even add shells or sea glass to the bottom of the vase.

5. Use summer scents for candles and air fresheners. Ocean, sand, and grass scents set the mood for the season and allows your home to smell like it does outside. Or use candles that are blue, sea green, or other tropical colors even if they are not scented to decorate. You can always tie colors in that are already part of the interior design of the room this way.

There is a plenty more you can do, depending on what you already have. These are just a few places to start if you are looking for a change with a low budget.

Good luck!
