Temporary home: Temporary design solution
08/26/2008 - By Ariana Knittel When it comes to making changes to your rented apartment, make sure you read your lease, and know what all of your rules and regulations are before you do anything. Let's get started!
First of all, most landlords will let you paint if you ask permission first, and only if you agree to paint the walls back to the original color when they move.
Also, changing the carpet or ripping up the floor, and taking down wallpaper is probably not an option, but there are many other things you can do for a temporary solution. For example, hang up some art. Try putting it up with putty or small nails; something that can easily be patched up when you move out. Use throw rugs to add color, to cover drabness and/or rough surfaces of the existing floor. You may want to consider having free standing and hanging plants as well as flowers, to decorate a particular area or room. This adds life and diversity to the area.
Create the illusion of space in a small apartment. Hang mirrors to open up the room, use light colors as to not close in the room. Storage is also a big aspect of keeping your place open. You can double pole your closet, hang shelves, and even add a bookcase to store items away and save as much space as possible.
Finally, make it more personal and make it your place. Display pictures and mementos of places you’ve been, people you’ve seen, and things you’ve done. You can try using some simple, elegant frames or even shadow boxes to make them stand out without causing permanent damage to the walls. You want to represent your style as much as possible and give it that “homey” feeling.
