Trends of 2008- Au Natural with a touch of drama
08/26/2008 - By Ariana Knittel

This year has been all about mixing it up and using a combination of styles when it comes to interior design.

Adding to what you already have and changing things around without making it into a whole new room, is what is popular right now. You can even use pieces that you already have along with some new items to make the project into something fresh and exciting.

Creating drama in a room, without being gaudy or too loud, is a great new trend. Making your house come alive without screaming for too much attention or trying to complicate a room is what seems to be “in” right now. Choosing art pieces that are vibrant but not obnoxious, breathes life into a room while giving it character. Finally, luxury has become more about making a statement without over-doing it and looking too ritzy.

People are now using more natural materials: wood, metal, rock, and other elements that give a calm and soothing feel to a room. Colors are also staying in the natural theme, with earth tones dominating the interior design scene. Greens, oranges, browns along with whites and shades of silver and copper, are combined to contrast, yet blend together. Gray has become the new black for design, especially softer shades that can stand alone or combine with other colors. However, the trick is to not go overboard with too many colors and to stick in a range of some that can still work together while adding a little bit of dramatic effect.

Combining textures and appealing to your senses, especially touch, has been a big interior design trend of 2008. For example, material that is soft to the touch mixed with metal or stone can change the feel of an entire house.

You may also want to use big, powerful pieces of art and furniture, but without going too big or too extreme. Most people want their house to feel warm and homey, not big and expensive, even if it is.

Today, people seem to be more Earth-friendly and environmentally conscious and are starting to (if they haven’t already) go green. It has become globally important to start using more recycled materials in all aspects of our lives. This is more than a trend these days and has become a way of life.
